Port Vue, Pennsylvania Reo

Post by Chariots of Fire » Mon Feb 08, 2021 1:15 am

This one is just begging to get built! Now that the Pierce Enforcer is done it's time for a new project.

The model will be 1/25 scale. The frame is from an ALF kit, tires are from the parts box and wheels are from an old Volvo truck kit. The cab was mastered by me and then made available through AITM. This is one of the AITM castings. The hood has been separated from the cowl and the doors have been opened so far. A new front axle was made from brass along with wheel backs and king pins. Wheels are connected to the wheel backs with small screws. The screws need washers to prevent them from sliding through a brass bushing in the wheel.

In order to open the hood, which also includes the grill on the Reo, I made folding hinges of small brass channel pieces. In order to keep the hood in place when it is closed I've disguised a brass tube as a coil and then fitted a brass insert for the tube that is attached to the hood. Not prototypical but it does the trick.

Here's the cab and floor board assembly on the frame.

Some adjustments have been made in the past few days. The fenders needed to be longer in the front so some REN shape was added to each one and was blended in. While I was at it I shimmed the right side of the hood to close the gap with the fender. Last but not least I rebuilt the bumper out of brass strip stock and then nickel plated it. It will save trying to get a good finish using Alclad or Bare Metal Foil.

Work has been done on the Gold Comet Reo engine. I found the engine in the Opel Blitz fire truck kit to be the right size but it needed many modifications. The basics of the engine construction are complete with some dark washes to be applied overall and to the exhaust manifold. Plumbing and wiring still have to be done but it's good basic progress. The location of the engine has been set with holes drilled in the engine mounts and the brackets of the frame. Common pins hold it in position.
The fan belt and water pump pulleys were turned in aluminum. The driveshaft ends came from the parts box but the shaft itself is brass tubing with the short section sliding inside the long section. Once in place I can then slide the short section forward into the end of the transmission and touch the shaft with some super glue to secure it.

A bit more done on the engine. Just a few little details to finish up. Steering gear is also done but is in need of paint and highlighting.

Wow Charley! Looking good. So your not giving that shrink ray any time to cool down.
