Once again, our
friends at Twin Whistle Sign
& Kit Company presents us with another "S scale"
firehouse, this time from FDNY Engine company 5.
This is the third "S scale"
firehouse produced by Twin Whistle Sign & Kit Company. Previous releases
include a generic New York, New England, and FDNY Squad 18
fire houses.
FireEngines.net has already done a short article on their
FDNY Squad
18 Firehouse. All of these structures will hold 1:64
scale models.
The real firehouse is located
at
340 East 14th Street, Manhattan, New York City and is the
oldest active firehouse in New York City. One of the
oldest photos of the firehouse is a photo of members and
Engine 5's steamer in front of their quarters taken in the mid
1880's.
According to Allen Goether,
owner of Twin Whistle Sign & Kit Company, "I’m interested in
the historical aspects of firehouses, particularly New York
firehouses. This firehouse is a natural for us to build, and
for me personally to design to scale. I first saw the façade
on a on
this You Tube video, and it grabbed me right away. The
firehouse, built in 1881 according to records, has been active
and modified through the years, but retains the original
external architecture. Some buildings just move me.
These folks who either work there or have been there in the
past are heroes. This is a beautiful museum quality S scale
kit based on FDNY Engine Co. 5 firehouse. This unique model
has laser-cut alderwood and basswood 2nd and 3rd stories and a
resin cornice and doorway. The door goes up and down. The roof
is removable."
